Top 5 Tips for Young, Aspiring Leaders

Walsh:PR is an active member of IPREX, a $420m network of independent PR agencies with 115 offices and 1800 staff worldwide.

Back in March we had the opportunity to welcome partner agencies from IPREX to Dublin for the annual Global Leadership Conference (GLC). The GLC provides young, aspiring PR leaders the opportunity to grow their skills, learn from eachother and gain insights and expertise from PR agencies on other markets. 

Here are the top five things delegates took away from the GLC 2019:

1. Think like an owner, not a manager

    There is a big difference between managers and agency owners. Managers focus on implementing other people’s strategy, values and culture. A leader acts like an owner, immersed in all areas of the business and looks to how they can improve, raise standards and make a difference. 

2. Pay attention to the questions you ask

    Managers focus on the who, where and when questions. A leader will ask what and why.

3. Make opportunity, don’t wait for it

   Leaders are always looking for opportunity they don’t sit back and wait for it to land on their desk. They look around their agency and ask what needs to be done and how they can utilise their team to make change happen. 

4. Leaders are the people owners rely on

   As one agency director shared at the conference, “I want my leaders to know about change before I do. I want them to advise me.” Leaders are the people owners rely on and have confidence in to guide the agency. 

5. Provide Feedback up and down

  A common theme at the event was delegates' ability to give feedback, both to junior staff and senior management. Delegates found it difficult to share their advice for fear of being critical. A good way to combat this is to de-personalise feedback and start by asking, “Would you mind receiving feedback?”  Or perhaps pair people to give each other feedback, to proactively ask of one another, “What opportunities am I missing? What am I not seeing?”
