Too embarrassed to seek treatment for nail infections

Aug 03, 2010
According to a new survey carried out among chiropodists in Ireland, a staggering 84% said that Irish people have a lack of awareness about nail fungal infections and worringly, 40% reported that clients typically present when the condition is at a severe to chronic stage.

Furthermore, 40% of chiropodists cited embarrassment as the reason for the delay in clients seeking help earlier and instead presenting when the condition is at a severe stage. The new survey, carried out on behalf of Nailner Repair, a unique pen applicator treatment for nail fungal infections, looked at the levels of awareness of nail fungal infections in Ireland.

94% of the chiropodists surveyed said that they see a client with a nail fungal infection at least once a day, however 78% said that clients frequently visit them with a foot ailment unaware that they have a nail fungal infection.

A nail fungal infection is a highly contagious condition that attacks weak or damaged nails. Nail fungal infections can be found in fingernails but are far more common in the toenails because of the warm, damp environment feet live in. Early intervention to treat infections is crucial because if left untreated, they can become painful and even result in the loss of a nail.

General Practitioner, Dr Paul Heslin said, “From my experience, half of the problems associated with the finger and toenails are caused by nail fungal infections. I sometimes find that patients are surprised when I diagnose the condition and are mostly worried about the unsightly look of their nails. I reassure patients that nail fungal infections are quite common and can be treated easily."

Dr Heslin adds, “Nail fungal infections can take time to clear so my advice to patients is to be patient!"

With the new survey results showing such a low level of awareness about nail fungal infections in Ireland, a new information leaflet has been produced to help people learn more about the condition. The leaflet highlights early signs of nail fungal infections, provides tips on how to prevent them, while reassuring clients that the condition is a common occurance.

The leaflet has been produced in association with Nailner Repair, the over the counter treatment that combats nail fungal infections at source, and is available in pharmacies, GP surgeries and in a range of chiropodist clinics nationwide.
