Families encouraged to play with their children in family games night

Oct 20, 2009
Parents are encouraged to find time to spend playing with their kids on a regular basis. That’s the message from the seventh annual National Game Playing Week, which runs this year from 23rd – 30th October.

With longer nights setting in and disposable income at an all time low, National Game Playing Week is calling for families to get back to basics by having fun and spending quality time together with a weekly family games night.

According to child psychologist, Dr Celine Mullins, spending time together as a family and especially playing together is important for a child’s development, but this critical time is often lost in the pressure of daily life.

“Playing with your children builds a bond that will last forever and opens the door for sharing concerns when the need arises, as well as being a great stress reducer for overworked parents,” she said.

According to Waterford-based games manufacturer, Hasbro, board games still earn their place in the heart of the family with Monopoly, at the ripe old age of 70 and Cluedo, just 60 years young, continuing to top the bestseller lists all over the world. Meanwhile leading Irish toy retailer, Smyths has predicted that the latest fast-paced, 3D version of Monopoly, Monopoly City and the twisting-shaking-pulling game, Bop It will feature in the top 10 toys in Ireland this Christmas.

To support National Game Playing Week, there are special offers on board games in stores nationwide and you can log on to www.ngpw.ie for downloads and tips about running your own family game night.

Tips from Dr Mullins for holding a games night:

•   Start the Games Night early before family members become too tired
•   Set aside appropriate time for playing games so you do not have to rush play
•   Plan your Games Nights in advance and include a selection of games and healthy snacks
•   If your children fall within different age groups here are some tips to over-come potential problems:
o   Play games with each child separately
o   Choose games that are simple enough where kids can play using the same rules.
o   For games like Monopoly or Game of Life divide the family into teams and give each child a job he can do well
•   Alter the rules to accommodate younger children if required
•   Be patient and go over the rules carefully so everyone understands
•   Choose the right game for the child’s age - look out for games with the appropriate age on the box
•   For 3-4 years games like Elefun are fun and help develop coordination, while Lucky Ducks helps with developing knowledge of colours and shape
•   For 4-5 years games like My First Monopoly, Frustration are great fun
•   For 5-6 years Cluedo Junior, Mouse Trap and Kerplunk will keep the family entertained while Jenga helps refine motor skills
•   For 6-8 Years, games like Operation, Twister and Pictureka refine their motor skills and require quick thinking
•   Play fair at all times so children learn to follow the rules
•   One-to-one time in addition to group play is beneficial for children
•   Help children if they make a mistake
•   Stay calm and friendly even if you are losing!
•   HAVE FUN!
