It’s official, our sense of humour makes us Irish, according to Flahavan’s survey
Nov 05, 2009
The Irish sense of humour is what makes us who we are, according to a new survey carried out by Flahavan’s, who this week cekebrate being Irish for over 200 years with the launch of Flahavan’s Porridge Week. Three quarters of those surveyed ranked ‘Sense of humour’ as the number one Irish characteristic and this was agreed across all age groups throughout the country.
When asked to rate other typically Irish characteristics, 69 per cent of those surveyed think we’re Friendly, 65 per cent chose Talkative, while 61 per cent thought we are an Easy Going nation.
Over 1,000 people were surveyed by Empathy Marketing between 16th and 20th October 2009.
An interesting result from the Flahavan’s survey found that 35 per cent of people think Begrudgary is an Irish characteristic. This is particularly strong amongst 25-34 year olds living in Leinster. Begrudgary was picked ahead of Generous and Charming as was Pride.
We also don’t rate ourselves in the intelligence or passion departments. Only 25 per cent chose intelligence as a trait that defines us, while a lowly 20 per cent think Irish people are passionate.
When asked about ‘What’s great about being Irish’, 63 per cent said Irish people are welcomed everywhere we go. 53 per cent claim it’s the ‘craic’ that’s makes it great to be Irish. Other aspects that scored well when asked what’s great about being Irish include our culture and our global standing for the size of the country.
In line with the begrudgary theme, only a third of those surveyed are proud of the achievements of our fellow country men and women.
John Noonan, Sales and Marketing Director at Flahavans said, “The Flahavan’s survey highlighted some interesting statics. Amidst all the doom and gloom, our sense of humour makes us unique.”
The survey also asked how often families sat down together to have breakfast, which is the most important meal of the day. A large number of those, 39 per cent, only have breakfast together at weekends while 19% of families have breakfast together every morning.
“Eating a substantial breakfast shortly after waking up is healthy for you and your children. Breakfast feeds a child’s body and brain, helping provide the energy and stamina needed to pay attention in class, get schoolwork done and take part in physical activities,” added Noonan
Flahavan’s has been operating in Kilmacthomas, Co Waterford for over 200 years, spanning six generations, making it one of Ireland’s longest family-run businesses.
Flahavan’s porridge is available in a variety of options, from the Progress and Organic ranges to the the convenient Quick Oats range, including the single serving pots and the microwaveable sachets, which now includes an Organic option.
