Schools called to register for fun and games to raise money for charity

Sep 14, 2010
Primary schools across the country are invited to register for Ireland’s annual School Game Playing Day on Friday, 22nd October. The idea behind the day is for pupils to have fun playing board games while also raising money for their school or local charity.

Schools are asked to allow children to bring €2 along with their favourite board games to play during class on the last day of school term. The funds raised can be used by the school itself or donated to a charity of their choice.

To register to take part in School Game Playing Day or for more information including useful tips and downloads for teachers, schools can log on to www.ngpw.ie, call (01) 6613533, or email games@hasbro.ie.

Now in its eighth year, School Game Playing Day is enjoyed by thousands of Irish students. It’s the initiative of Waterford-based, toys and games manufacturer Hasbro, who has pledged six top MB and Parker board games free for every school that gets involved.

Anne Dermody, Hasbro Ireland, said: “Aside from the many educational benefits there are associated with playing board games, it’s really all about having fun. We’re pleased to provide schools with this opportunity to have some fun in class, while also raising money for something they feel will best benefit the children.”

As a further incentive to get involved, Hasbro will donate €200 towards the School Game Playing Day fund of the school in each county that best shows how much fun it had on the day. “Each year we’re overwhelmed with the huge response to this project and look forward to judging the many colourful, creative entries that range from photos and stories, scrapbooks and collages to DVDs showing what the day meant to them,” she added.

School Game Playing Day is part of National Game Playing Week (NGPW), a week devoted to having fun playing board games, which runs this year from 22rd – 29th October.
