Snoring survey reveals impact on Irish relationships

May 26, 2010
More than a third of Irish adults have a partner who snores

New research* published today shows that more than a third of Irish adults have a partner who snores. The research also demonstrates the impact of snoring on our daily lives and relationships.

The survey, carried out by Empathy on behalf of anti-snoring throat spray Silence, found that almost 1 in 5 Irish adults argued more with their partner as a result of snoring and that nearly 20% sleep elsewhere to get away from their partner’s snores.

The volume of an average to a heavy snore can range from the sound of a normal conversation to the noise of a passing lorry (45dB to 95dB)**. Despite this, the research found that over half of Irish adults believed that their partner wasn’t bothered about the effect that their snoring had on them.

These sleepless nights were found to take their toll on the lives and relationships of Irish adults with almost 40% stating that they were exhausted during the day as a result of their partner’s snoring. More than 10% admitted to being too tired for sex.

Desperate for a good nights sleep, the survey revealed that Irish adults would be willing to sacrifice a great deal if their partner was to never snore again. Almost a third would give up a night out with friends while a whopping 15% would forego a weeks pay.

The survey revealed that Irish adults turn to a variety of tactics in order to get a peaceful nights sleep. Over half of respondents dealt with their partner’s snoring by turning them on their side while one in five admitted shouting at their snoring partner, with twice as many women as men resorting to this method.

Commenting on these statistics, family GP Dr Paul Heslin said: “This study highlights the anguish of those who have had to put up with a snoring partner and the impact on their lives. In my experience, most snorers never fully acknowledge the negative effects of their snoring on those closest to them. Poor sleep can have serious effects on mood, relationships, sexuality and health. Any new, safe and effective treatment option for snoring should be welcomed not only by GP's and their patients but also by those long suffering partners.”

With a RRP of €12.99, a 50ml pack of Silence provides a months supply of restful nights. Silence is the only throat spray with a bioadhesive formula, which means that, unlike other preventative measures, it works immediately and lasts throughout the night. Clinically proven, pleasant tasting and quick and easy to use, Silence targets the cause of snoring directly with a specially designed diffuser, which delivers the unique mousse to the throat tissues, where the snoring originates.
