Wellness Water - Ireland’s first spring water in a biodegradable bottle

Jun 23, 2010
Wellness Water, the first pure Irish spring water in a 100% environmentally friendly bottle was launched today (Tuesday 22nd June 2010) by Clare Spring Water Ltd.

Wellness Water is packaged in the first biodegradable and compostable bottle in Ireland. It is 75% more environmentally friendly to produce than its oil based counterpart. It is currently being distributed in 550ml bottles to convenience stores nationwide by BR Foods.

The launch comes just nine months after the official opening of the Clare Spring Water bottling plant in Lissycasey, Co. Clare. Almost E5m has been invested in the plant which has seen employment grown from 10 to 26 people.

Wellness Water comes from a pure Irish spring that is naturally filtered through organic land from a protected underground source in the rolling hills of Co. Clare. The ground is certified as organic by the Irish Organic Farmers and Growers Association.

The bottle is made from corn or sugar beet (PLA) and is the only packaging material that significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 75% to combine performance with environmental benefits. The label is also biodegradable.

"This is a product that offers people a real solution to their environmental concerns in disposing plastic water bottles. We are also confident that Wellness has high export potential. Already, Clare Spring Water has secured substantial contracts to supply an International Airline and a restaurant chain based in The Netherlands as a result of our environmentally friendly packaging," said Paul Connellan, Managing Director.

"Our fully automated production line in Co. Clare is powered by wind energy, further reducing the carbon footprint," he added.

Wellness Water is supporting The Cliffs of Moher in becoming one of 7 Wonders of Nature, a much sought after international accreditation. The Cliffs logo will appear on all Wellness Water bottles for the next 18 months.
