Getting Social With… Christian Tierney

Written by Roseanne Regan

“Getting social with” is where we get to turn the tables and become journalists ourselves by sitting down with a familiar face to talk all things social!

This month we had the pleasure of working with Christian Tierney, the 20 year old YouTube sensation who is directing music videos for global stars! Christian has made quite the name for himself in the music industry after working with the likes of Conor McGregor and Hozier and international artists like Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore and Major Lazer.

When he was just 15, Christian set up a YouTube channel to showcase his videos of live sessions and interviews with new Irish and International musicians. In the channel’s first year, he discovered and filmed the then unknown global megastars, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, helping to introduce them to a wider Irish audience for the first time. Two years later, he discovered the then up and coming singer-songwriter James Bay and filmed the first-ever recording of his song ‘Let It Go’, which has since gone on to be a global hit. Christian’s channel currently has over 8 million views.

Christian was working with us to promote the EPA’s ‘Story of Your Stuff’ secondary schools competition. Despite his rising stardom, he is incredibly genuine and modest – to say the Walsh:PR team are huge fans of his is an understatement!

How do you like your news in the morning?

Social media, I don’t really pay attention to traditional media.

Broadsheet or tabloid?

Broadsheet, I hate tabloid gossip.

Laptop, smartphone or tablet?

Smartphone first, laptop second.

Favourite social media channel?

I have a lot of fun on Twitter but I also love Instagram because as a photographer I’m very visually orientated.

To tweet or not to tweet?

Tweet, always. My friends laugh at how unfiltered my tweets are. I try to be a true reflection of myself on Twitter.

What’s the story… Instagram or Snapchat?

Instagram. I have a much bigger following on Instagram and most of my Snapchat followers follow me on Instagram too so it just makes sense to stick to Instagram. I use Snapchat all the time for talking to friends and using their filters but Instagram stories work better for me.

No coffee table is complete without a copy of….

I actually hardly ever read physical books or magazines. I much prefer watching an interview/documentary/film or listening to a podcast than reading a book or a magazine. I wish I was a book person, I know I’m missing out on a lot by not reading.

‘Like’ – what are your favourite things on/about social media?

Memes, jokes, photography, videos, snapchat filters and interviews are probably what I consume most on social media.

‘Dislike’ – pet peeves on social media?

2 kwl 4 school ~aesthetic~ Instagrammers who think they’re better than everyone because they listen to techno and wear Supreme clothes.

What trend do you see taking off in your industry/social media over the next 12 months?

I don’t know, it’s hard to tell what will become popular on social media.

What will your Facebook status read in 5 years’ time?

“Add me on *whatever the new most popular social media platform is*”.

And most importantly…. Most used emoji?

Probably the flashing camera.
